Societies in the past accepted and practiced the death penalty, otherwise known as capital punishment, for those who were found guilty of committing capital offenses. In today’s society there are mixed opinions on the subject. Capital punishment is argued by the people to be a just or an unjust way of sentencing someone who is found guilty of a capital offense. Many people argue that capital punishment is wrong, because there are many factors in a case that could be over looked. Since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976, eighty-two inmates have been freed from death row. That is one death row inmate found to be wrongfully convicted for every seven who were executed. Earl Charles was one of these inmates. He spent three years on a Georgia death row for murders he did not commit. If he had faced a system where the death penalty was to be carried out faster, then we would bemoaning the court’s error (1). Many people believe that the application of the death penalty tends to be based on random choice, rather than any reason or system. Serial killers such as Gary Ridgway, who admitted killing forty-eight prostitutes and runaways got life in prison. A nurse in New Jersey admitted to killing seventeen people also got life in prison. However, ill and impoverished murderers who could not afford good lawyers were given the death penalty with no second thoughts. David Hocker, murdered his boss was executed after a one day trial. To be an effective leader, I believe you must be able to put yourself in a position that sets you up for success and be able to motivate others to work towards a common goal. To do this, it is important to use the strengths that you have a high propensity to do well. You must also learn from past experiences of success and apply what worked well and avoid those that did not. Just as a kitten born in a stove oven does not make it a biscuit, a child born of a leader does not make him a leader. We must learn to lead, and to do so requires us to develop a leadership style that encourages success. When we began the Leadership I Seminar, we learned about our strengths using the Strengths Finder 2.0 assessment. According to the assessment,†¦show more content†¦On the other hand, if you do not give adequate direction, you might learn that they have wandered too far from the path and you are left with chaos and have to spend valuable time getting everyone back on track. What I have found that works best for me is to allow people to use their strengths while providing predetermined checks along the way to monitor our progress and to make decisions in time to ensure that everyone is on track throughout the process. I also define success and failure prior to beginning the project, if possible. A simple example I would apply with investors who wanted to invest in a risky investment was to convince them to only invest a certain amount, say no more than three to five percent of their investments. If the stock increased by 100%, then they should sell 50% and lock in their gains. Conversely, if it declined by a predetermined amount, say 50%, then they should cut their losses and look for an alternative investment. The reason we set these entry/exit points in advance is because it takes emotion out of the decision making process. People become very emotional and tend to really believe that it will work, even long after it has become apparent that a new direction should be adopted. But with less that a third of the labor force. Agriculture is another important sector which employs more than three fifths of the workforce. The economy has been recording a growth rate of more than 7% since 1997 which has led to poverty reduction by more than 10%. In 2006 and 2007, the country achieved an economic growth of about 9.6%. From the 2007 estimates, the country has a GDP of about $2.965 trillion measured by the purchasing power parity while it stands at $894.1 billion measured by official exchange rate.   However due to the large population, the GDP per capita still remains low at $2,700. The service sector contributed 55% of the GDP with the industry sector following with 28.4% while the agriculture sector contribute only 16.6% but employing more that 60% of the labor force.   The rate of unemployment remains at 7.2% while 25% of the population lives below the poverty line (CIA world Fact book, 2004).
